San Francisco's Plan for the Big One: Safe Enough to Stay

With decades of experience in renovating the residences of San Francisco, we are no strangers to performing a seismic retrofit in preparation for the next big quake….but it was a shock when the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR) asked us to construct their post-earthquake exhibition.   Residents can visit the SPUR Urban Center at 654 Mission Street through 4/18/12 to learn all about best practices after a major earthquake.

Estimates show that only 75% of the city’s current housing stock will provide adequate shelter for its residents after a major quake.  The exhibition illustrates what steps can be taken now to ensure homes are safe enough to occupy after a temblor strikes.   Learn all about high risk structures, liquefaction/landslide zones, potential disruptions to basic services, and the materials you would need to survive as you shelter in place in a damaged San Francisco studio apartment. The exhibition also features a neighborhood emergency center simulation, which would provide essential services and information for residents who remain in their homes.

The good folks at SPUR have done a tremendous job in developing a disaster plan for the city by the bay and its residents. We were proud to be involved and now it’s your fault if the word doesn’t get out.   www.spur.org
