FLORA GRUBB GARDENS

Ground up construction of a commercial nursery, cafe and office space. The new building maintains the scale of its industrial surroundings while providing a quiet backdrop to display its beautiful gardens. It was built using light weight prefabricated steel clad in corrugated metal and redwood siding salvaged from local barns.   Extensive site work includes the removal of 300 tons of contaminated soil, expanding permeable surfaces, and the placement of 300 cubic yards of 25% slag concrete. This project was designed to reduce its resource consumption through the use of natural cooling and daylight, an efficient radiant heat system, rapidly renewable casework, and solar panels that generate much of the building’s electricity.
